South End vs JP: Open Studios Double Header Weekend!

All photos courtesy of JP Open Studios.  Due to last week’s Yom Kippur holiday, two of Boston’s largest Open Studios events are scheduled for this weekend:  Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 6pm.  What better way to find the best art to take home with you!  You better get started….

If you have a smart phone, or like twitter, both neighborhoods are going high tech.  Jamaica Plain Open Studios has a self-guided tour that is available as an iPhone app (search for Jamaica Plain Open Studios at the App Store–it’s free), and you can tweet about your JPOS Experience:  use the hashtag #JPOS2010.

South End Open Studios is piloting a SCVNGR application where visitors using a Droid or iPhone can earn points by visiting studios and responding to challenges, and be eligible to win a gift certificate for $50 of art.   To play, download the SCVNGR application (also free) and then search the ‘treks’ for South End Open Studios.

Or be old school and visit studios the good old-fashioned way:  just wander in!  You usually see a friend or make a new one.  But I previewed both neighborhoods’ applications and I think I might be hooked!   Check them out–compare, contrast! They are fun.  Because they use geocoding, they work best when you are in the hood, so get up and out there!

For Open Studios newbies–if you don’t know your way around the South End or JP, even if you don’t use a smart phone you’ll be fine–everyone picks up a map once you get to the neighborhood–look for the brightly colored markers on artist buildings and you will know you are there.  Info tables will have maps and directories.  This is a great way to experience a variety of art at your leisure, and the weather is supposed to be perfect for strolling or biking in (try Southwest Corridor Park or coming up the Greenway, depending on where you are coming from), or if you you might splurge on a pedicab ride.

Remember, say thank you to the artists for their welcome and their commitment to their community.  And don’t forget to buy some art!  Artists can help you arrange delivery as necessary, don’t be afraid to THINK BIG.
