The 12th Annual Roxbury Open Studios:
Celebrating an “Even Dozen” – October 2 & 3, 2010

(Roxbury, MA)  Explore the works of more than 70 Roxbury artists by visiting their studios and group show locations during the 2010 Roxbury Open Studios on Saturday and Sunday, October 2 & 3. An opening reception will be held at the National Center of Afro-American Artists at 300 Walnut Avenue in Roxbury on Friday evening, October 1, 7:00-9:00 p.m.

Now in its twelfth year, Roxbury Open Studios is an annual two-day self-guided tour that invites the general public to interact with Roxbury-based artists working in a wide range of media. The event is free and open to the public and will feature works for sale, including photography, paintings, quilts, jewelry, sculpture, mixed media and home décor.

Roxbury Open Studios is produced by Madison Park Development Corporation, which promotes arts and culture for their own sake and as a vehicle for economic development.  The weekend increases the visibility of Roxbury artists and their work, and aims to help residents economically and professionally. Roxbury is home to renowned artists and is the location of the Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists.

Group display sites will be Hibernian Hall in Dudley Square and the First Church of Roxbury in Elliot Square. Northeastern University’s African American Master Artists in Residence Program near Egleston Square will open individual studios and the exhibition gallery. Other colleges opening art galleries especially for the event include Mass College of Art and Design’s Black Artists Union at the Student Life Gallery, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts graduate gallery in the Mission Hill Building, and the Resnikoff Gallery at Roxbury Community College.

All locations are within walking distance of the Green, Orange or Silver MBTA Lines. There will be free vans shuttling between all sites. Discover Roxbury will lead one guided walking tour of studios in the Fort Hill section of Roxbury on Saturday, October 2nd. To register for this special walking tour contact Derek Lumpkins at 617.427-1006 or visit  www.discoverroxbury.org.  For more information about Roxbury Open Studios go to http://www.madison-park.org/ROS
